University of Chittagong is one of the largest and most prestigious public universities in Bangladesh. It was established on 18 November 1966 to expand higher education in the southeastern region of the country. Since its founding, the university has played a vital role in academic development, research and national progress.

The university is located in Hathazari, about 22 kilometres from Chattogram city. Spread over nearly 2,300 acres, it is one of the largest university campuses in Bangladesh. The campus is surrounded by hills, forests and natural landscapes, providing a scenic and peaceful academic environment. It includes academic buildings, research centres, a central library, residential halls, medical facilities and a unique shuttle train service that connects the campus with the city.

The University of Chittagong offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes through multiple faculties and institutes. The major faculties include Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Science, Business Administration, Law, Biological Sciences, Engineering and Marine Sciences and Fisheries. It also hosts several specialised institutes such as the Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries and the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences. The university offers a wide range of subjects including English, Economics, Public Administration, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Accounting, Finance and International Relations.

The university has a student population of over 25,000 and a large faculty body engaged in teaching and research. The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Dr Abu Taher.

With its vast campus, academic diversity and strong research focus, the University of Chittagong continues to be a leading centre of higher education in Bangladesh.
