Bangladesh Agricultural University is the premier agricultural university of Bangladesh and one of the leading institutions of its kind in South Asia. It was established on 18 August 1961 as East Pakistan Agricultural University and was renamed after the independence of Bangladesh in 1971. Since its founding, the university has played a central role in advancing agricultural education, research and rural development in the country.
The university is located in Mymensingh on a vast campus of approximately 1,200 acres along the western bank of the Old Brahmaputra River. The campus includes academic buildings, research laboratories, experimental farms, dairy and poultry farms, fisheries facilities, residential halls, a central library and administrative offices. Its spacious and green environment supports practical training and field-based research.
Bangladesh Agricultural University is organised into six faculties: Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Animal Husbandry, Agricultural Engineering and Technology, Fisheries, and Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology. These faculties together comprise more than 40 departments, offering undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programmes in specialised subjects such as Agronomy, Horticulture, Soil Science, Plant Pathology, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Fisheries Biology, Agricultural Finance and Animal Nutrition.
The university has a student population of over 8,000, including undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is supported by a strong faculty body, many of whom hold doctoral degrees from reputed institutions worldwide.
The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Dr A K Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan. Under his leadership, the university continues to expand its research output, international collaboration and contribution to national food security. Bangladesh Agricultural University remains a cornerstone institution for agricultural innovation and sustainable development in Bangladesh.
