Shahjalal University of Science and Technology is one of the leading public universities in Bangladesh, particularly known for its strong focus on science, engineering and research. Established in 1986, it was the first university in Bangladesh to adopt the American semester credit system. The university is located in Kumargaon, Sylhet, on a scenic campus surrounded by hills and natural greenery.

SUST began its academic journey with only three departments and has since expanded significantly. Today, it offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes through several schools and departments. The major schools include the School of Applied Sciences and Technology, School of Life Sciences, School of Physical Sciences, School of Social Sciences, School of Management and Business Administration, and School of Arts and Humanities. Popular departments include Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Business Administration.

The university has a student population of over 10,000 and a strong faculty body engaged in advanced research. SUST is particularly recognised for its achievements in information technology, engineering innovation and scientific research. It has contributed significantly to Bangladesh’s ICT sector, producing many graduates who work in leading national and international organisations.

The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Dr Md Aminul Haque Bhuyan. Under his leadership, the university continues to promote academic excellence, research collaboration and innovation. With its modern academic system, disciplined campus environment and strong emphasis on science and technology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology remains one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in Bangladesh.
