BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) is a specialised private university in Bangladesh dedicated to fashion, textiles and business education. It was established in 2012 under the Private University Act by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), the apex trade body of the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector. The university was founded to develop skilled professionals and creative designers for Bangladesh’s globally competitive apparel industry.
BUFT is located in Nishatnagar, Turag, Dhaka, with a modern permanent campus equipped with academic buildings, design studios, textile laboratories, computer labs, a resource-rich library, seminar rooms and student facilities. The campus environment is designed to blend creativity with technical learning, supporting both practical and theoretical education.
The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through its main faculties, including the Faculty of Fashion Studies, Faculty of Apparel Studies, Faculty of Textile Engineering, and Faculty of Business Studies. Popular programmes include Fashion Design and Technology, Apparel Manufacturing Management and Technology, Textile Engineering, Merchandising Management, and Business Administration. The curriculum integrates design innovation, production technology and industry-oriented training.
BUFT has a growing student population of several thousand learners and maintains strong industry connections with garment manufacturers, buying houses and international fashion brands. Internship opportunities, industry projects and fashion shows are integral parts of the academic experience.
The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Dr Engr Ayub Nabi Khan. Under his leadership, BUFT continues to strengthen research, sustainability practices and global partnerships. The university plays a significant role in supplying skilled graduates to Bangladesh’s RMG and textile sectors, contributing to innovation and competitiveness in the fashion and apparel industry.
